Quality assurance offered at Heartwood
The Heartwood Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy was founded by Leigh Smith who is the company director and course designer.  Heartwood has strived for excellence in course delivery for a decade and has been accepted by two awarding bodies to deliver training within a regulated and accredited framework.

Some of our courses are accredited by CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body) the UK's leading specialist awarding body in Counselling and Psychotherapy, and some are accredited by The ABC Awarding body which is one of the UKs largest awarding bodies with 180 years of examination and assessment expertise.
CPCAB works in partnership with the Open University and provides an opportunity to combine course credit points from the Heartwood courses to create a Foundation Degree in Counselling.

Both of the awarding bodies we use are regulated by Ofqual, (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation).

Our Diploma courses are in line with the membership requirements for the BACP and our students are accepted as members into the BACP as student members until qualified and then they can become full members.

Heartwood students who complete their training will leave with a qualification which is recognised by the QCF (national Qualifications and Credit Framework) and the Open University, NHS and employers. The qualifications we offer are all recognised within the field of counselling as the most prestigious of vocational counselling qualifications.

Progression Route

Heartwood offers students the opportunity to start their counselling progression route from the very beginning and continue through to professional training.

Students start their training with an introductory Level 2 course.  This is a 6 week course - usually with at least 2 start dates throughout the year.  There is a September start date, with further start dates throughout the year.

Students progress from the Level 2 to the Certificate in Counselling Skills.  This is a foundation level course following on directly from the Level 2 award.

The Certificate course will prepare and support your work within any profession in which listening and communication skills would be an advantage.  It also prepares students for the 2 year professional Diploma.

Once you have qualified from your Level 3 Certificate you will be ready to apply for the two year Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling which will qualify you to practice as a fully qualified counsellor, and become a BACP or NCS member.

After you have qualified as a counsellor  you may wish to continue with your training and stay on to study our 1 year Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Level 5) to become a psychotherapist.

You may also wish to return to Heartwood once you have reached 450 hours of client work and study to become a Counselling Supervisor (Level 6).

We run courses with two different awarding bodies and it is not necessary to stay with the same awarding body through your progression route. Students on the Level 4 Diploma are invited to become student members of the BACP.
