Counselling courses offered at Heartwood

The Heartwood Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy was founded by Leigh Smith who is the company director and course designer.  Courses are accredited by CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body) the UK's leading specialist awarding body in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

CPCAB works in partnership with the Open University and provides an opportunity to combine course credit points from the Heartwood courses to create a Foundation Degree in Counselling.

Our Diploma courses are in line with the membership requirements for the BACP and our students are accepted as members into the BACP as student members until qualified and then they become full members.

Heartwood students who complete their training will leave with a qualification which is recognised by the QCF and the Open University and full membership of the BACP.

Progression Route

Heartwood offers students the opportunity to start their counselling progression route from the very beginning and continue through to the professional training.

Both Level 2 and 3 combine to  create your first academic year of counselling training. Once you have qualified from this first year you will be ready to start the 2 year Level 4 Diploma.  All our courses are fully accredited with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body - the UKs biggest counselling awarding authority.  The Levels 2 and 3 are also ideal CPD courses for people working in the caring professions as they are on the Qualifications & Credit Framework (QCF).

This first year of training is really important and getting the right support is vital to your success. you will undergo lots of self development and grow in self awareness. Sometimes this can be a challenge and at Heartwood we provide a supportive and encouraging environment for students to spend time reflecting on their formative experiences.

This is a blossoming time for students and you will grow in self confidence as you experience the powerful effect of your new skills. Your tutors will develop a close relationship with you over this first year and  give you  feedback and direction to encourage your development as a competent counsellor.

You will learn a range of new techniques which you will use in the counselling practice sessions:

  • Focusing
  • Active listening
  • Empathic divining
  • Echoing
  • Immediacy
  • Presence
  • Minimal encouragers
  • Reflective responding
  • Dual awareness

You will explore a variety of models and theories which will underpin your work as a counsellor and create the solid foundations from which to build a strong career as a therapeutic counsellor.

The course is creatively designed to maximise the students enjoyment and the sessions are always uplifting, lively and informative. Students find the exercises fun and powerful and comment on how much they learn about themselves, and how their ability to relate openly and honestly with others grows.
